Growing up in Southern Louisiana was filled with many unique traditions. One of those, Mardi Gras, is traditionally celebrated from Epiphany up to Fat Tuesday, culminating a season of carnival fun. Fat Tuesday will always be in February on the Tuesday exactly 47 days before Easter and the day before Ash Wednesday. Originating in France, the King Cake was brought to New Orleans in 1870 and has spread across the South and beyond. These large, delicious pastries come in many varieties today and are frequently taken to work and parties during the season. Whoever finds the baby hidden in the cake will be king or queen for the day, but they will also be required to buy the next king cake!
My sister, LeAnne Poindexter, agreed to share her easy way to make a king cake. You may want to try it out to experience this fun Louisiana tradition this year.
